How big is your kitchen?
How This Calculator Works
Pantry storage needs can be estimated two ways. The first uses your kitchen square footage and applies NKBA Kitchen Planning Guidelines, which set target amounts of pantry shelf and drawer frontage for small, medium, and large kitchens. The second uses your household size and how often you grocery shop, since more people and less frequent shopping trips both mean more food stored at once.

FAQ
How much pantry space do I need?
It depends on your kitchen size and how you shop. NKBA guidelines recommend 180 to 310 inches of pantry shelf and drawer frontage depending on kitchen size, while household-based estimates scale with the number of people you're shopping for and how often you shop.
What's the difference between a reach-in and a walk-in pantry?
A reach-in pantry is at least 24 inches deep and 36 to 48 inches wide. A walk-in pantry needs a minimum of 5x5 feet (25 square feet) with at least a 36-inch clear walkway.
Do I need more pantry space if I buy in bulk?
Yes. Monthly or bulk shoppers generally need more shelf space than weekly shoppers, since more inventory is being stored between trips.
