Frequently asked questions

How much rice do I need per person?

A standard serving is about 1/4 cup (45g) of uncooked rice per person, which yields roughly 3/4 cup cooked for long-grain white rice. For heartier appetites or rice-based dishes like fried rice or risotto, use 1/3 cup uncooked per person.

Does rice double in size when cooked?

Most long-grain white rice roughly triples in volume when cooked. Medium and short-grain rice, like sushi rice, expands less and is closer to doubling in volume. Our calculator accounts for these differences automatically.

How much water do I need to cook rice?

The standard ratio is 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water for white rice. Brown rice typically needs 2.5 cups of water per cup of rice. Rice cookers may require slightly less water than stovetop methods.

Can I scale rice for a large group?

Yes — simply enter the number of people and our calculator scales the exact amount of dry rice and water needed. A good rule for groups is to slightly overestimate, as cooked rice keeps well in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Why does my rice turn out mushy or undercooked?

Mushy rice usually means too much water or lifting the lid during cooking. Undercooked rice means too little water or cooking time. Use our calculator for accurate ratios and avoid stirring rice while it simmers.

For precise rice cooking every time, use a digital kitchen scale to measure dry rice by weight rather than cups.
